MARVELLOUS MUMS ON A MONDAY: SARAH KERR, EATWELL-UK THE REWARD BOX & NUTRI FILL-IT

Our #MarvellousMumsonaMonday focuses on mums in our local borough of Wandsworth who we think are interesting and inspiring. Here at Mums of Wandsworth we love meeting mumpreneurs and mumbosses and there are a wealth of talented, inspiring mums running businesses from home right here in the borough.

This week we interviewed super BUSY mum Sarah Kerr, founder of not one, or two but THREE businesses!

Hi Sarah, please tell us a little about yourself and your family and what you used to do before becoming a mumpreneur.

Hi, I am a Mum of two, Lucas (5) and Chloe (4) and we live with my husband Tim in Earlsfield.  Before I had my kids I worked for a management consultancy in the city but I gave it up when Chloe was born

Tell us a bit about your business? Why and when did you start it?

I run EatWell-UK  I identify cool products which are selling well in other countries, but aren’t available here.   I then work with the brand to negotiate distribution rights to represent and build their brand in the UK.  I now represent 7 products (Yumbox, BoBo and Boo, LunchPunch, LunchBoxLove, Masterplan, Tidy Table Tray and My Squeeze) and have developed 2 of my own (The Reward Box and Nutri FillIt)

When I had my kids I realised I couldn’t juggle management consultancy and being the Mum I wanted to be so I started looking for other options – 3 months in I was starting to despair a bit!  I stumbled upon Yumbox by accident as I wanted to buy it for my son and they didn’t have anyone selling it in the UK; I saw my opportunity and it has grown from there!

How did you fund your business and where do you work from?

I used savings from when I was at work (as well as a loan from a very understanding husband!) and I work from home (and the bottom of a ball pit / a farm more often than not – thank God for i-phones!).

What does a typical working day look like for you?

I pay for 2 full days of childcare per week (and have done this since I started the business).  On those days it is head down and I work solidly all day (often only remembering to shower when its time to collect the kids!), on the other days it is grabbing every spare 5 minutes I can to keep things ticking over.

How do you balance both work and family life?

The whole reason I started the business was so my kids could come first.  I make sure I do everything I can during the day to be with my children but this often means that evenings are spent catching up

What have been your biggest challenges so far and how did you overcome them?

The 2 biggest challenges have been keeping my faith in what I am doing (even when it seems to be going wrong or I simply miss having colleagues and wearing smart suits and heels!) and managing cash flow (the bug bear of all small businesses).  I always knew cash flow would be a challenge but when you have a looming VAT bill, a huge order you are desperate to ship from China and you need the money by the end of the week it becomes very real!

What advice would you give to other mums starting a business?

Have faith in yourself and follow your dream.  It certainly isn’t an easy path (I work harder now then I ever did in management consultancy) but the balance it gives you is so incredibly rewarding that it is worth every tough moment.

Do you have any tips to banish the mum guilt we all feel?

Nope – I think we all feel guilty every day for just about everything don’t we?  I don’t know a Mum who doesn’t feel bad; the working ones, the stay at home ones and the ones who run their own businesses.  Personally I accept the guilty moments (the time I missed their perfect ballet twirl or their rugby try because I was doing some work on my i-phone) as I’m pretty sure I am doing just as well and as badly as everyone else 🙂

What’s the best thing about living / working in the borough of Wandsworth?

Everything.  I love Wandsworth, I love the fact I can’t go to the post office in Earlsfield without stopping to chat to at least 3 people.  I love the fact that I feel like I live in a village but that I am 15 minutes from central London and most of all I love that fact that running my own business here I have a huge support network of other Mums (and Dads) doing the same thing.

Thank you so much for chatting to us – particularly when you are SO busy! We’re tired just listening to the amount you get done in a day!
